I filed to run for Hanahan City Council on day one of the submission process for a very simple reason; to protect this city. Not just for me or my neighborhood, but for all of Hanahan. Tanner is no more important than Lakeview or Eagle Landing. 𝗪𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲.
I have lived in South Carolina for over 25 years. Over four years ago, my wife and I found a great opportunity to build our new home in Bowen. Living in our new community has been one of the best neighborhood experiences we have ever enjoyed. Meeting our neighbors with young families has been a joy. Watching these kids grow up in this short period of time is the absolute compelling reason I want to do this. The sense of community we share is what inspired me to run for city council.
I am running for Hanahan City Council because I am passionate about serving the community and ensuring that our city remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family. With 35 years of experience in radiologic technology, both as a practitioner and an educator, I have dedicated my career to helping others and improving lives. My background in education, including being honored as Educator of the Year, has strengthened my skills in communication, leadership, and problem-solving—qualities that are essential for representing citizens effectively.
Additionally, having developed and successfully run two small businesses, I understand the challenges that local entrepreneurs face. My business experience equips me to advocate for policies that support economic growth and ensure that small businesses in Hanahan thrive. I am committed to listening to the concerns of residents, finding practical solutions, and fostering an inclusive, prosperous community. I believe my blend of healthcare expertise, educational leadership, and business insight uniquely qualifies me to serve the citizens of Hanahan on the City Council.
Here are four points I would like to address:
1) Pay for Our First Responders and Public Works
I believe that our first responders—police, fire, EMS—and public works employees are the foundation of a safe and thriving city. Unfortunately, they are underpaid compared to their counterparts in nearby municipalities, despite providing essential services that we cannot do without. My priority is to advocate for fair compensation, ensuring they receive the raises they deserve. While I understand the importance of budgeting, I believe we can work toward incremental increases over time to remain fiscally responsible while showing our appreciation for the critical role these workers play in keeping Hanahan safe and functional.
2) Economic Growth
As someone who has successfully developed and run two small businesses, I know firsthand the importance of creating an environment where local businesses can thrive. Hanahan needs to continue fostering a business-friendly atmosphere that encourages entrepreneurship, economic development without urban sprawl, revitalization and attracts new investments. We should focus on smart economic growth by promoting policies that support small businesses, offer incentives for local startups, infill and attract diverse industries. Balancing responsible growth with sustainability is key, so we need to encourage economic expansion while ensuring it benefits all residents, not just a select few.
3) Responsible Development
I have been a vocal advocate for responsible development, most notably through my opposition to the Panther Development proposal, which would have added over 300 apartments at the entrance to Tanner Hall. I believe that growth should never come at the expense of our residents' quality of life. This why I oppose any rezoning of single-family property to commercial zoning. Development needs to be carefully managed, considering its impact on traffic, schools, emergency services, quality of life, potential flooding risks, and green spaces. Economic development of what we have, revitalization and infill where possible is key before any consideration of expansion and loss of greenspace. I will continue to stand against any large-scale apartment building development. By focusing on transparency and engaging in open discussions with developers and the community, I aim to ensure that any future development aligns with Hanahan’s character and residents' needs.
Additionally, there is an absolute that must be upheld: if you are a developer and build single-family homes, you create a moral contract with your homeowners to do no harm to their quality of life. Bowen needs a plan and needs to be finished focusing on the commercial center to add valuable services all can enjoy, enhancing walkability and natural beauty of the walking trails, and updating where needed so our special needs community can enjoy this as well. The city needs to work closely with the Wrenn Group to help provide clear understanding of the needs of the community, the current residential population, and how to effectively balance finishing the project with regards to the current infrastructure and traffic challenges.
𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐧. W𝐞 should 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲’𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬. 4) Code Enforcement/Safety
Code enforcement and safety are critical to maintaining the well-being and appearance of our city. We need to ensure that the rules governing building codes, safety standards, and property maintenance are strictly enforced. This not only helps keep residents safe but also preserves the aesthetic and property values of our neighborhoods. While it's important to enforce safety-related regulations, such as property maintenance and hazard prevention, we must approach code enforcement with fairness and compassion. Rather than focusing solely on punishment, I believe we can help residents who may be struggling to meet certain standards, especially seniors, low-income families, or those facing hardship.
As a council member, I will work closely with our enforcement officers to ensure they have the resources they need to do their job effectively. Additionally, I will advocate for programs that offer assistance or resources to help residents comply with safety codes, whether through education, support services, or partnerships with local organizations. This approach will create a safer, more supportive, and inclusive environment for all, while still upholding the integrity of our community.

I am running for city council to defend this city as I have done, and I will continue to do – I see this as a moral obligation and the right thing for me to do. This is 𝐨𝐮𝐫 home. This is 𝐨𝐮𝐫 city.
I will continue to advocate for the city in its entirety for livability, the rights of citizens and business owners, preservation of our unique hometown feel, fiscal growth, long-term strategic planning including land use, infrastructure development/redevelopment, safety, and environmental protection. All of it, not only Bowen.
Your vote matters! Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. I would be honored to serve you and this city on council.

Greetings Hanahan friends and neighbors,
With the election season well under way in Hanahan I would like to take a brief moment to say 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐘𝐨𝐮.
Thank you for all the messages of encouragement and support. Thank you for your time and thoughtfulness; whether it has been one on one, or in groups, you all have expressed your love for our city. This has been an education like no other. Hanahan is cherished by many generations who have lived here, worked here, grown up here, gone to school here, raised their families here, and retired here. Hanahan is the definition of small-town America. 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞.
To me this is service. This is not ambition. This is my time to step forward and serve my community. I am very thankful for the numerous generous offers of campaign funding, but I respectfully decline. I do not ask for a dime from anyone. This is my time to give and serve. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭.
I have lived in Hanahan for almost 5 years, and I have fought for Hanahan and won against great odds. I have picked up piles of trash on the side of the road, helped my neighbors thaw out pipes on Christmas day, fill sandbags in the pouring rain for others, help move the middle school, and volunteered when the booster club called for help at the high school. Why? Because it is the right thing to do. That is service. It is not me trying to win an election. It is putting in the work. It is giving a damn.
Early voting begins Oct 21st! You can early vote in person at the Hanahan library. I would be honored to receive your vote and represent you on city council.
𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮!

Ethics:
Ethics are the foundation of public service. As a city council member, I will act with integrity, transparency, and accountability. My decisions will always be guided by what's best for our entire city, free from personal biases or special interests. I am committed to listening to your concerns, being honest in my actions, and serving you with the utmost respect. Upholding high ethical standards isn't just a responsibility, it's essential to rebuilding the trust that our community deserves.
Conflicts of interest:
Conflicts of interest erode public trust, and trust is essential between a community and its leaders. As a city council member, I will be committed to complete transparency and integrity. I will avoid any situation where personal interests could influence my decisions. My priority is to serve you without compromise, ensuring that every decision I make is in the best interests of our community. Your trust is paramount, and I will work diligently to earn and keep it.
Growth, Revitalization and Responsible Development:
Growth and Revitalization are essential for our city's future, but they must be approached thoughtfully. I believe we should prioritize economic growth without contributing to urban sprawl. Instead of expanding outward, let's focus on fixing, maintaining, and rebuilding what we already have. By investing in our existing neighborhoods and infrastructure, we can increase property values, improve community spaces, and enhance the quality of life for all residents.
Revitalization of our current areas strengthens the fabric of our community. It means supporting local businesses, upgrading public facilities, and preserving the character that makes our city unique. This approach not only stimulates economic development but also fosters a sense of pride and belonging among residents.
When planning Responsible Development, it is critical that we address the Bowen project in Tanner. Bowen needs to present a master plan. Completion of this project should be focused on the commercial center to add valuable services all can enjoy, enhanced walkability of the nature trails, focused preservation of green space, and ADA updating where needed so all our community members can enjoy this as well. The city needs to work closely with the Wrenn Group to help provide clear guidance about the needs of the community, the rights of homeowners, the current residential population, and how to effectively balance finishing the project with regards to the current infrastructure and traffic challenges. As in all projects, I continue to oppose rezoning of single-family zoning to commercial. Homeowners have rights.
Let's work together to breathe new life into our neighborhoods, making them vibrant and prosperous places for everyone. By focusing on smart growth within our existing footprint, we can build a stronger, more connected community that benefits us all.
Do I support high density housing?
I oppose new apartment buildings in Hanahan
I do support the rebuilding and redesign of old existing structures to new modern buildings that complement the citys design goals.
Do I support rebuilding homes for commercial property?
No, if that requires rezoning from original single family zoning.
Do I support a building moratorium?
No, a moratorium on all building stagnates economic growth due to the long process of state and federal agencies. We can work concurrently with projects and monitor closely the progress while keeping the community informed. We do not want to prevent economic growth. We can focus internally on revitalization and rebuilds instead of sprawling into green space.
Inclusion and Representation:
Inclusion and representation are fundamental to the health and vibrancy of our community. As a city council member, I will be committed to ensuring that every citizen feels seen, heard, and valued. We are a city full of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, and it's this diversity that makes us strong.
I believe that decisions affecting our community should reflect the voices of all its members. I will work to create accessible platforms for dialogue, so everyone has the opportunity to share their ideas and concerns. This means holding community meetings at convenient times and places, utilizing online tools for wider engagement, and actively reaching out to underrepresented groups.
By fostering an inclusive environment where every person has a seat at the table, we can make more informed decisions that benefit everyone.
Employee Retention:
Employee retention is vital to the strength and stability of our city. Our dedicated employees—especially our frontline workers in police, fire, EMS, and public works—are the backbone of our community. When we lose them, we lose valuable experience and the trusted relationships they've built with residents.
To keep these essential team members, we must offer fair compensation, opportunities for growth, and a supportive work environment where they feel valued. Investing in our employees isn't just about pay—it's about respect and appreciation for their commitment to serving us all.
As a city council member, I will prioritize policies that enhance employee retention. By taking care of those who take care of us, we ensure better services for everyone and build a stronger, more cohesive community.
Generating Revenue for the City:
Generating revenue for our city is essential to maintain and enhance the services that make our community thrive. As a city council member, I will be committed to finding balanced and sustainable ways to increase our revenue without placing an undue burden on our residents.
First, I believe in fostering economic growth by attracting new businesses and supporting our local entrepreneurs. By creating a business-friendly environment, we can expand our tax base organically, bringing in additional funds that can be reinvested into our community.
Second, I propose exploring grants and partnerships with state and federal programs. Tapping into these resources can fund vital projects like infrastructure improvements, public safety enhancements, and community development without straining our local budget.
Third, it's important to review our current spending to ensure efficiency. By identifying and eliminating wasteful expenditures, we can redirect funds to areas that need them most, maximizing the impact of every dollar.
Lastly, I am committed to engaging with you, our community, to gather ideas and prioritize initiatives that reflect our community's values. Your input is invaluable in creating solutions that benefit us all.
The date is approaching fast. Spread the word! Crowley for Hanahan! I would be honored to serve this city on council.
